Long-term Pulmonary Outcomes of Children with Bronchopulmonary Dysplasia

Overview
Preterm birth is associated with the disruption of normal lung development and chronic lung disease. There are early life factors that predispose a preterm infant to BPD; including initiation of positive pressure ventilation and exposure to high oxygen concentrations. Less is known regarding the impact of post NICU factors that can affect lung health and development in individuals born premature. This talk will give an overview of early and late risk factors that influence lung health in children with BPD, examine long-term respiratory outcomes of children and young adults with BPD and discuss outpatient follow-up and guidelines to improve respiratory outcomes and quality of life.
